CIGES (Centre for Health Information, Management, and Economics SA) is responsible for managing and integrating information systems for healthcare institutions in the canton of Neuchâtel. With more than 360 applications and thousands of daily exchanges, the complexity of the IT system required a major overhaul.

Challenge: Modernize the exchange of medical and administrative data by replacing the outdated architecture with a centralized, secure, and scalable solution.

Objective: Implement a robust integration platform to standardize, secure, and orchestrate data flows between hospitals, home care services, medical-social establishments, and healthcare sector partners.

“Over 300 point-to-point flows, leading to complex management and high maintenance costs.”

“Applications using proprietary formats and flat files instead of open standards like FHIR.”

“Need to strengthen health data protection against the growing risks of cyberattacks.”

“Increasing demand for digital services required a scalable and flexible architecture.”

To address these challenges, CIGES deployed a new integration platform based on modern technologies.

Key Components of the Solution

  • WSO2 API Manager → Secures access, ensures API governance, and centrally manages exchanges.
  • WSO2 Micro Integrator → An integration bus facilitating flow orchestration and data transformation.
  • HAPI FHIR → A FHIR Data Hub for storing and standardizing healthcare information.
  • RabbitMQ → A message broker enabling reliable and asynchronous data exchange.

Hybrid Architecture & Interoperability

  • Data standardization with FHIR for better compatibility between applications.
  • Flow orchestration through an API-first architecture, reducing point-to-point connections.
  • Advanced security with centralized identity and access management.
